Ms. Reynolds' Third Grade Class

Math

Math is taught for 90 minutes each day in accordance with the “Hays Elementary Math Program” which follows a sequence provided by the district. One of our primary resources used is called “Bridges in Mathematics.” Using this program, each morning students will spend time in the “Number Corner.” Here they either review previously introduced concepts or are introduced to new skills. New skills are taught with various resources following the district’s sequence and students are periodically assessed for understanding of that skill. Students will do math homework weekly.

The Hays Elementary Math Program is based on the idea that children need to have a deep understanding of place value, number sense, and computation skills in order to make sense of higher-level mathematical thinking. Through hands-on activities, games, and class discussions, children will be asked to explain their thinking. Much attention is given to the actual process that is involved in problem solving.
