Ms. Reynolds' Third Grade Class

Getting To Know Ms. Reynolds

My name is Katherine Reynolds, and I am a third grade teacher at Elm Grove Elementary in Buda, Texas. This is my third year as a teacher, and my third year teaching third grade. I attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated in May 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Learning and Development. I always knew I would end up in a field such as education; I have been working with and for children since I was about 14 years old. I feel it is a great privilege to be the one who gets to teach children about things they’ve never heard of before. To watch a child go from learning to read to reading to learn is a tremendously gratifying and touching experience, and it’s just one of the many things that makes my job so special. One of my absolute favorite things to teach in third grade is the solar system and space, and I love it when my third graders begin to master multiplication! I also love getting to introduce my emerging readers to some of the many fabulous children's book authors, such as Roald Dahl, Louis Sachar, and Beverly Cleary.

On a more personal level, I live in Austin, and love being able to spend my early adult years here. I love being outdoors; I spend many hours running and biking on the trails around Town Lake, and have run several 5k and 10k races. I shop locally, supporting the small businesses and restaurants that make Austin such a fun and eclectic place to live. I’m an avid reader, and I hope my enthusiasm for reading will rub off on my students. In June of 2009 my mom moved to Beijing, China to work for China Daily, which is an online, English-only newspaper. Prior to her move to China, she lived in Algiers, Algeria for nearly two years, so I miss her quite terribly! My dad is a photo editor for the Dallas Morning News and my stepmom Nancy also works for the News as the National Desk editor. They live in Dallas with my little brother, who is six and just started first grade. My younger sister Claire is a senior at UT and is spending her last year of college studying abroad in Paris, France. Traveling is something else I really enjoy, so I'm looking forward to visiting my mom over Christmas and my sister next summer!
